WILLIAMS, PACKHAMS, ANJOU, RED BARTLETT, ABATE FETEL
Williams are some of the most familiar pears on the market. They are bell shaped with thin green to yellow skin (green when underripe, yellow when fully ripe). Inside, they have pale white, juicy flesh. The flavor has been described as buttery and classic pear.
A bulbous, wide-bottomed pear, the Packham pear has a look similar to its Bartlett parent with green skin that ripens to a light yellow. The large pear is irregularly shaped, slightly leaning to one side. Its skin is covered in tiny, russet lenticels. Packham pears have a sweet and juicy white flesh with a smooth texture.
Anjou are a medium-sized variety, with a slightly egg-shaped appearance. The green-skinned pears have a short, squat body and almost no neck typical of a pear. The bright green skin is often blushed with a rose flush on the side most exposed to the sun while on the tree. The flesh of the Anjou pear is bright, white and dense with a slightly sweet flavor with subtle notes of citrus. Anjou pears are very juicy when ripe. Anjou pears remain green when ripe, with only a slight change in their bright green-colored skin. Press gently against the stem end of the fruit to test for ripeness. Anjou pears ripen from the inside out; if the flesh gives slightly, the pear is ready to eat.
The Red Bartlett pear is a vivid red, has an off-white flesh with a sweet taste and smooth texture. Like their green counterparts, the Red Bartlett has a “true” pear shape and taste. They also change slightly in color from a dark red, often with light vertical stripes, to a bright red. Ready to eat when slightly soft to the touch the Red Bartlett and Bartlett pears are identical in taste and texture, the only difference is their color.
The long, slightly banana-shaped Abate Fetel pears are a yellowish-green with a slight russeting. Their white flesh has a slightly crisp texture and a sweet flavor with notes of honey. The entire pear is edible, including the seed bed. Abate Fetel pears are ready to eat when they are just barely soft to the touch.
