The data takes relevance when looking at the international trade of Argentina and punctually, sales abroad. In this sector, the country is far from what the numbers themselves were. According to data from the DNI consultancy, headed by Marcelo Elizondo, the fresh lemons from the country go to the world represent 0.3 percent of the total.
What does that number mean? Once, in the 1960s, they accounted for 0.8 percent of the world, more than double that now.
Another comparison, Chile, an economy that as a whole is much smaller than Argentina, already exports 0.35% of the total of what the world trades, in addition to having agreements with several of the main markets of the planet. The neighboring country was always below Argentina, but now, it surpassed it. Mexico represents 2.2% of the total and Brazil 1.2%.
More than 1.5 million tons of lemons will be produced by Argentina this year, increasing by 10 percent compared with 2017.
This increase is not only to the American market, but also due to the European one; the fall in Spain’s lemon production this year opens a new opportunity for Argentina with expectations to ship 200,000 tons of lemons to the EU this year.
Industrialization
The true strength of the Argentine production of lemons is in the processing industry.
In fact, 75% of the production is industrialized, and Argentina is the main exporter of concentrated juice, essential lemon oil and dehydrated lemon peel. The latter represents 93% of all byproducts, while lemon oil is 6% of the total.
– Concentrated juice: it is used in the food industry as an acidifier and also in other industries.
– Dehydrated lemon peel: source of fibers and minerals, dehydrated for the extraction of pectin. It is used in the food industry, cosmetics and animal feed.
– Lemon essential oil: it is produced by distilling the juice emulsion obtained by pressing the whole fruit. It is used in the food industry and also for the manufacture of perfumes, cosmetics, personal hygiene products and cleaning.
